Protesting teachers tell parents not to send their children to school next week

Parents have been called upon to keep their children home for one week between October 13-19, 2023 as teachers in both the Basic and secondary education sectors all over Cameroon, will be observing a 1-week strike action during the said period.

The call was made in a release by a college of teachers’ trade unions on Wednesday October 4, 2023 in response to government’s reaction to their demands made on September 28, 2023. The teachers say the government has not proposed a workable solution to their plights.

They have therefore called on nursery, primary and Secondary school teachers all over the national territory to stop pedagogic and coaching activities by staying in their various homes. “Consequently, parents should not send their children school during the strike period”.

This decision from Teachers’s Trade Unions comes at a moment when they are celebrating the Teacher’s day. It also comes at a moment when the new school year is being threatened by multiple disruptions initiated by ‘operation dead chalk movement’. The teachers demand among others, debts and bonuses owed them by the government.

The government of Cameroon through a college of Ministers made an outing on September 28, during which the unveiled a number of measures already taken and that are being implimented to resolve the problem of teachers. The measures according to the teachers, are unsatisfactory and do not resolve their plights.

The school year is just five weeks old and if the situation is not carefully handled, might result to a blanc school year like the case in the English subsystem when the crisis started in 2016.
