National Social Insurance Fund says employers must register domestic workers

In a recent release, the institution in charge of collecting and distributing social contributions from employers to employees has announced systematic checks across Cameroon after September 2022.

80% of domestic workers in Cameroon are women earning between F CFA25.000 and F CFA30.000 without any social benefits or pension after sometimes spending over 10 years in service. In Cameroon over the years, domestic workers have either been victims of abuse or have been arrested for kidnapping or abusing their employers’ children.
The International Labour Organisation stated in 2018 that over 61% of the world’s employed people are in the informal sector.

This is not the first time the National Social Insurance Fund is making such a move. In 2021, the fund threatened to wage a war against employers who failed to pay their workers’ social rights by seizing their passports considering that the said employers owed over F CFA150 billion.
As a move to limit what they term “exploitation”, the NSIF have urged both employers and the domestic workers to visit any NSIF branch or their website www.cnps.cm for proper affiliation details.
