UN Chief demands authorities in Middle East contain spillover conflict

UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has called on warring parties and those with influence over them to contain a spillover of hostilities, which have continued along the Blue Line, the border between Israel and Lebanon.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday October 11, 2023, the UN Chief said he is in steady contact with leaders in the Middle East in the wake of the new war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas, with several priorities, with the first being to avoid a spillover of the conflict.

“We must avoid a spillover of the conflict. I am concerned about the recent exchange of fire along the Blue Line and the reported attacks in southern Lebanon. I call on all parties and those with influence over those parties to avoid further escalation and contagion,” the UN chief said.

He noted that many workers of his organization have lost their lives in the last four days by Israeli shelling.

Another statement by Antonio Guterres, demanded the release of all Israeli hostages held in Gaza, which according to the Israeli government are more than 100 people.

“Civilians must be protected in any conflict, as enshrined in International humanitarian law,” recalled the UN Chief.

Guterres as well disclosed that over 220,000 Palestinian refugees are being accommodated in 92 facilities of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip.

“We are working around the clock to support the Gazans and call for crucial supplies like food and water to be allowed into Gaza”. Guterres implored.

Egypt, has already facilitated human access through the Rafah crossing and El Arish airport.

In the meantime, the Gaza Health Ministry says airstrikes have killed over 1,100 Palestinians . The number of civilians among the dead in Gaza.
