Abegly Martin killed during visit to Bamenda

A well-known educator, Abegly Martin, who is based in the United States has been killed in Bamenda, just days after returning to his hometown in the North West region.

Originally from Mankon in Bamenda II Subdivision, Abegly was shot in the leg on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, by suspected separatist fighters. According to sources, he had received a phone call that led him to leave his residence in Ntarinkon. Upon meeting the individuals, he reportedly resisted attempts to be taken away, prompting the attackers to shoot him.

Abegly was rushed to a nearby health facility, where he spent the night. However, he passed away the following evening, reportedly due to excessive bleeding before receiving adequate medical care.

At this time, CNA cannot independently verify who was behind the attack or the exact motive, as no group or authority has publicly claimed responsibility.

Residents say Abegly had returned to Bamenda to oversee work at a construction site linked to one of his personal projects. A video making rounds on social media shows him dancing and celebrating joyfully with family and friends, many say he seemed happy to be home again.

He had taught at Sacred Heart College Mankon before traveling to the United States. While in the US, Abegly was an educator and consultant for the past 25 years.
