3 Cameroonians die, 13 missing, 14 rescued as boat capsized in St Kitts

At least 3 migrants have died, 13 are still missing while 14 have been rescued off the Caribbean waters, AP news has confirmed that the victims are mostly Cameroonians who left Antigua early Tuesday.

Further reports say the group departed from Antigua heading to US Virgin Island before their boat sank near St Kitts Island.

The Cameroonians migrated as Tourists with hopes of crossing into the US. Colonel Telbert Benjamin, chief of defense for Antigua told state media that the incident happened some 60 km from northwest Antigua.

Last week, several reports said many Cameroonian tourists were trapped in Antigua on their way to the US.

Tuesday’s incident is therefore an indication that some of the trapped tourists decided to challenge the waters for greener pastures.

Many persons have fled the armed conflict in the Anglophone regions that started in 2016 when armed separatists retaliated against the government’s crackdown on peaceful protesters.
