William Ruto becomes Kenya’s fifth President

The polls were closed on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, and the winner was known less than six days after- deputy President William Ruto succeeds Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenyan Wire has confirmed from the Independent Election and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

He beat long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga who has made the most attempts to take power in Kenya.

Four previous Presidents have ruled Kenya since independence; Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and outgoing Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to electoral laws, to become a President in the first round, you must have a 50% and above and at least 25% of votes cast in 24 of the 47 Counties.

William Ruto won with 50.49 % of the votes and had more than half of the country’s polls.
