Panic in Kumba after IED explosion
The people of Confidence street, Fiango-Kumba were panic-stricken when someone announced that he had spotted a bag in an awkward corner beside a snack bar.
Their suspicions were true, it was an Improvised Explosives Device inside the bag, waiting to be detonated.
Tuesday night’s discovery led to the dissertation of the area while security forces were alerted.
Kumba is the economic headquarter of the South West region, but also a stronghold for separatist fighters.
According to security officials on the scene, a tipped-off by an informant was timely because the author may have been targeting a larger population or a busy moment to detonate it.
Sources say it took the military about 3 hours to deactivate the locally made bomb since. It was only shot outside the building making a loud sound and sparking.
Present on the scene, the |Senior Divisional Officer for Meme, Ntou’ou Ndong Chamberlin, reassured the population that the military is working very hard and tirelessly to protect their lives and properties.
He acknowledged having signed a prefectural order banning people from entering beer parlors and in crowded places with bags.
He ordered the owner of the targeted snack bar and others to be vigilant from now on.
This was the second improvised explosive device discovered in popular bars within a month in the same city. The first was discovered in a bar around the Buea road, Kumba 1 sub-division.
