Douala: Young Entrepreneur manufactures coal waste into green gas

By Nde Laura

The scarcity and expensive nature of cooking gas across the country have resulted in many embracing alternative sources such as coal, firewood, etc.
Eric Tankeu, a young entrepreneur in the nation’s economic capital, Douala recycles coal waste into usable green gas.

According to him, over 150 thousand tones of coal pellets are been thrown away yearly in the city and this can result in air pollution and environmental risks. He collects this discarded coal waste and revalues and recovers them.

He says his main objective is to improve the living and cooking conditions of women and also to prevent them from some health risks.

“The green gas is used to prevent those who use charcoal for cooking from inhaling carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide which is a real health problem,”.

He added that the gas is synthetically produced from carbon-containing materials. It is made up of a tube that drives the charcoal when burnt to produce energy. The tube is then linked to the stove to produce fire. The service he says offers a safe and more sustainable way of cooking food without smoke.

Household users say they are more than satisfied using the piece as it is less bulky and economical
“It is not only economical but it is also fast . It doesn’t blacken the pot it leaves your pot clean after usage it is the same as using artificial gas,”. A user said.

Eric Tankeu is an environmentalist who has been working on different projects to help protect the environment for several years. He has encouraged all households to embrace the usage of green gas as it saves costs and doesn’t cause any health risks.
