Posts and telecommunications minister blames Eneo for poor mobile network

Several users of the different telecommunications networks in the country – MTN, Orange, Nextel, and Camtel are complaining about the poor services provided by these companies.

For several months now, consumers have been confronted with regular disruptions to the mobile phone network as well as internet access.

The Minister of posts and telecommunications (MINPOSTEL), Minette Libom Li Likeng, has blamed the electricity supply company, Eneo, for the poor networks as well as the ministry of public works.

“The malfunctions are also related to the activities of some companies like Eneo, whose untimely cuts strongly impact the provision of services of telephone networks, as well as the projects of the ministry of public works, causing regular damage to the optic fiber,” Minette Libom explained.

According to the minister, this state of affairs has caused Camtel to replace 30% of its optic fiber because of incidents caused due to road projects as the company holds a monopoly on the optic fiber network and makes it available to other operators.

However, she also stated that poor quality equipments which are unable to support the growing number of users also contribute to the poor network.

“The recent malfunctions are due to low investment or the use of poor quality equipment and infrastructure tools, unable to support the growing number of users,” she said.

She also admitted that the regulator’s limited capacity did not allow it to establish responsibility for the said disruptions on time.

MINPOSTEL ended a two-day workshop on the quality of service and coverage of electronic communications in Cameroon this December 14th in Yaounde. The aim was to seek ways of providing
quality service to the population in the year 2023.
