Arson attack on Mamfe Church, priests others kidnapped

Armed men suspected to be Ambazonia fighters have set on fire a Catholic Church in Nchang, Mamfe, Manyu Division in the South West region, CNA has confirmed.

Sources have said the Church was a target as five Priests ( Three from Mamfe and two from Nigeria), one Reverend Sister, one young girl, a cook, and an assistant Catechist were kidnapped during the incident on Friday, September 16, 2022.
“That the church is not supporting them and that the church wants to run schools in their Nchang village,” a CNA correspondent said this was the reason for the attack.

Christians will not be able to attend mass service this Sunday in their Church which is now a shadow of itself.

At the site the next day after the attack, some Priests came to take stock of the damages.

In anger, the Bishop of Mamfe, Mgr Aloysius Fondong Abangalo, said “What has happened is an abomination…the Cahtilic Church will not come to Nchang again”

He expressed his dissatisfaction and wondered why a Church will be targeted, “You people should pray for peace,” he urged the population of the area.
