Germany to repatriate first segment of Cameroonian artifacts

A Cameroonians delegation from the Inter-ministerial Committee in charge of the repatriation of Cameroonian cultural artifacts from Germany, have deliberated on the repatriation process of the first segment of the artifacts.

These deliberations prior to the invitation of the Federal Republic of Germany, held in Germany’s capital, Berlin on October 16, 2023.

Present at the meeting from Cameroon, were the Director of the Cultural Heritage at the Ministry of Arts and Culture, MINAC, Mrs. Marie Thierry Edjoa, the Director of the National Museum, Dr. Hugues Tchana Heumen, accompanied by Prince of Bangoua Tchatchouang, Cameroon Advisor at the Humboldt Forum and the Cultural Advisor of the Cameroonian Embassy in Germany, Mrs. Maryse Nsangou Njikam, Cameroon Trubune reported.

They spoke with German Authorities, Among them, the Deputy Minister in Charge of International Cultural Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Katja Keul, and Dr. Andreas Görgen, Secretary General of the Federal Ministry of Culture and Media.

The first segment of the artworks has been scheduled for the end of this year.

The purpose of this visit is mainly to identify the Cameroonian artifacts held by German museums, with a view to starting the repatriation process.

The German Museums of world cultures is said to hold 40,000 objects from Cameroon, more than the entire African collection.
