Zogo murder: Belinga was present at murder scene, made calls to Justice Minister – RSF

By Hans Ngala

A new report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has made new “damning evidence” that shows that Amougou Belinga was present at the scene when Martinez Zogo was tortured and killed.
The media watchdog revealed that Zogo’s killers (six in number), were hired from mainly out of Yaounde and “their statements and other evidence have also confirmed Belinga’s presence at the scene of the murder”, adding that an “examination of the phones of the suspects has confirmed that calls were made between Belinga and Danwe, and between Belinga and justice minister Laurent Esso, on the evening of the murder”.
According to the report by RSF, “Sources very close to the investigation report the discovery of damning new evidence of a payment of 35 million CFA francs (about 53,000 euros) from Belinga to Danwe”.
Justin Danwe, prior to his arrest nearly a week ago, was the second in command at Cameroon’s intelligence unit DGRE and took instructions from Eko Eko according to an earlier RSF statement in which Danwe was quoted during his confession.
At press time, “Belinga, who is being held in a cell at the defence ministry, has asked several times to call Esso, but his request has not been granted. RSF has meanwhile learned from a very reliable source that Belinga spent more than an hour in Esso’s office on 3 February, several days after first falling under heaving suspicions.”
President Biya was lauded by the organization for swiftly ordering an investigation into Zogo’s murder and the swift arrests that followed.
Meanwhile, CNA has not independently verified claims that Belinga has vowed that he will not go down alone and will continue to name names.
RSF has predicted that the murder scandal “is liable to eclipse President Paul Biya’s 90th birthday on 13 February” and that Biya “must surely realize to what extent the case is liable to cast a heavy shadow over the final period of his presidency and perhaps remove one of its most loyal allies”, an apparent reference to Justice Minister, Laurent Esso.
