Who was Senator Dakole Daïssala?

Dakole Daissala, a 79 year-old senator from the Far North region kicked the bucket in the wee hours of August 9 2022 at the University Teaching Hospital of Yaounde (CHU) after a rich political career.

Dakole Daïssala, the son of Kirdi from Kaélé in the Far North, was first Divisional Officer for Ngaoundere in 1967. He served as deputy director of general administration at the ministry of finance from 1969-1970 and director of transport from 1970-1973. From 1992-1997, he was minister of posts and telecommunications. He later became deputy secretary general of Cameroon Urban Transport Authority (SOTUC) and then minister of transport from 2004 to 2007.

Dakole had been in government until the April 1984 coup against President Paul BIYA when he was arrested and sent to jail without trial. After seven years in jail, he was released and joined the opposition bench with his party “Movement for the Defense of the Republic”. The party had six seats at the national assembly in 1992 but later allied with the CPDM giving them 94 of 180 seats at the glass house.

Despite the alliance, Dakole Daïssala threw his support to Samuel Eboua candidate of the “Movement for Democracy and Progress” in the 1997 presidential election but they failed to win. Later in 2000, he supported the Social Democratic Fund, SDF, in their call for the creation of an independent electoral commission. One year after, Daïssala participated in an unauthorized protest in Yaound against the national election observatory.

Years after these actions, the author of “Libre derrière les barreaux” was appointed senator in 2013 by President Paul BIYA where he had been serving until his demise on August 9 2022. His remains have been deposited at the Yaounde General Hospital morgue.
