Two Cameroonians have been killed in separate incidents in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. The killings happened last week but CNA could only verify the killings and the identities of the victims today.

According to sources, Mr. Kiyang George Nji, 55 was the first victim. The deceased was a businessman originally from Nkambe who has lived in Johannesburg for years. On the night of Thursday November 24 around 10:00 PM, Mr. Nji who is popularly known within the Cameroonian community in South Africa as Pa Nji, was on his way to receive goods when gunmen ambushed and shot him. According to our source, Pa Nji was with two of his employees who were shot in the legs and thigh but Pa Nji was shot “once in the leg and thrice in the chest” our source narrated. His employees are alive and receiving treatment for their wounds. It is still unclear why Pa Nji was targeted in this manner.

A second Cameroonian by name Chouyo Romeo, believed to be a Francophone was again shot and killed the next day at around 7:30 PM still in Johannesburg. Romeo who was in his late 30s was being carjacked and apparently resisted the theft of his car when the car thieves shot him in the stomach.
Another Cameroonian whose identity CNA could not confirm, was also killed in the South African coastal city of Cape Town. Sources say he is a young man from Nso. The reason for his killing has not yet been known. CNA will provide details as they become available.

According to the 2021 Numbeo Crime Index, South Africa was rated as the third most dangerous country in the world. The index featured six South African cities on the list of the top 20 most dangerous cities in the world, including Johannesburg and Cape Town among others.
Crime in South Africa is widespread and affects everyone regardless of their nationality or gender. The country has sometimes been considered one of the most dangerous places to be a woman due to the rampant incidents of femicide (mass killing of women).
