The note of the Governor of the South West, Bernard Okalia Bilai, to the political class around the regional headquarters of Buea, is for them to refrain from igniting polemics, which hinders living together.

Governor Bilai issued the statement during the first 53rd National Day preparatory meeting at the chambers of his office on April 22. He said May 20 was the “birthday” of national unity and had to be celebrated with a sense of patriotism and inclusivity.

He reminded participants that Buea was code-named the town of “Legendary Hospitality”. Which reflected the values of the people, especially towards nonindigenous. “Make people feel at home here”, Governor Bilai pleaded, challenging all to embrace living together.

The call came after several outings at various levels and during several functions, which had generated hard feelings and propelled hate.

The senior administrator had further saluted the bravery of defence forces in restoring peace to the region. He also mentioned the successful organisation of the national FENASCO B games in Limbe from April 12-17, 2025. He then called for doubled efforts in mobilisation, especially in the context of the upcoming elections.

During the planning meeting, the 2024 National Day was reviewed. Stakeholders had time to evaluate their performances and propose strategies to better the outcome this year.

This year’s National Day celebration in Buea will feature the Governor’s Cup, which was announced to begin in late April. Other activities will include 16 May, a day to spotlight the crossroads of living together in the region. It will be followed by the finals of the Governor’s Cup on May 17. Fourteen committees were created to begin work in preparation for the National Day celebrations in Buea.
