The Cameroonian government has banned non-profit organisations from wearing or possessing uniforms, badges, or any distinctive items resembling those of the Defence and Security Forces or the United Nations system.
The decision is contained in an order signed on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji.
The measure applies nationwide and prohibits members of non-governmental and non-profit organisations from using such attributes. Leaders of organisations in possession of the prohibited items have been given 15 days to hand them over to administrative authorities at the locations of their headquarters.
The Minister warned that offenders will face legal action in accordance with existing laws.
He has tasked regional authorities to enforce this order.
The government’s move comes days after Minister Atanga Nji warned the Chaplain Ambassadors Peace Mission (CAPM) over the use of uniforms and insignia similar to those of Cameroon’s Defence and Security Forces and the United Nations.
In a statement issued on July 16, the minister said the practice could create institutional confusion, encourage impersonation and lead to the unlawful assumption of official authority.
He ordered CAPM leaders to immediately stop using the outfits, insignia and emblems, warning that any recurrence could result in the dissolution of the association and possible criminal proceedings against its leaders.
