River swallows two souls as minibus attempts to cross wooden bridge

At least 2 people on-board a minibus lost their lives and 17 others injured on Friday November 10, 2023 after falling in a river in Mbang subdivision, Kadey division of the East Region.

“The accident occured when the minibus immatriculated CH 988810 with 19 passengers, from Batouri, was attempting to cross a bridge, but unfortunately missed its course and fell into the river,” the Divisional delegation of transport for Kadey said.

According sources, the minibus belongs to an interuban transport agency.

Contrary to the information in circulation, CNA got reliable news that the death toll stands at 2: a 48-year old lady, ABEBA Germaine and the driver, Bame Thierry.

The injured include a 3-year old girl.

The state of the bridge is deplorable given its unprotected and wooden condition. It is also situated between two administrative units, Batouri and Mbang.

Locals wondered why the government does not want to construct the bridge but keeps on collecting taxes on that road.
