Political analyst Aristide Mono has declared that President Paul Biya effectively won the October 2025 presidential election yesterday, August 6, following a series of pre-electoral hearings at the Constitutional Council in Yaoundé.
Reacting to the rejection of opposition leader Maurice Kamto’s petition as “unfounded,” Mono said the regime had two key objectives and succeeded at both: eliminating Kamto from the race and preventing a popular uprising.
“The fundamentalist wing of the regime is determined to throw shame to the dogs and use every means, even the most cynical and barbaric, to eliminate any real political competition in 2025,” he said on Equinoxe Radio.
“If they could do this to Kamto, what should we expect during the campaign? During the vote? And especially during the announcement of the results?”
Mono further accused the Ministry of Territorial Administration, ELECAM, and the Constitutional Council of blatant and shameful involvement in Kamto’s disqualification, arguing that the episode has severely undermined their credibility and public trust.
He cited remarks reportedly made by ELECAM’s lawyer, Atangana, to the President of the Constitutional Council, Clément Ntangana:
“Don’t be afraid. Nothing will happen to us. The people won’t do anything. This is our country. We do what we want. Nothing will happen to us.”
According to Mono, such confidence in impunity raises serious concerns about the point of participating in the electoral process.
“Apart from helping the regime legitimize its electoral fraud and the crude elimination of its most feared competitors, what role will ELECAM, MINAT, and the Constitutional Council play in the rest of this process?” he questioned.
He further cast doubt on the viability of opposition unity, addressing those calling for Kamto’s supporters to rally behind another candidate, such as Bello Bouba Maïgari or Issa Tchiroma Bakary.
“Do you really believe that between now and October, ELECAM, MINAT, and the Constitutional Council will somehow escape the grip of the 1982 regime?” Mono asked
