Patrice Motsepe takes responsibility for Cameroon AFCON tragedy

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has taken responsibility for the stampede that occurred during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

The helmsman of Africa’s football governing body assured journalists in Abidjan during a press conference that he has spoken with Cote d’Ivoire President Alassane Ouattara who assured him of the safety of everyone during the tournament.

“The incident in Cameroon is avoidable,” Motsepe stated.

“The issue of security was top on my discussion with President Ouattara and I am rest assured that this tournament will be hitch-free.”

A crush outside the Olembe stadium in Cameroon’s capital during the AFCON, left at least eight people dead and more than 35 injured according to officials.

AFCON 2023 will kick off on Saturday with host, Cote d’Ivoire facing Guinea Bissau at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium.
