Douala: youth prosecuted for cyberbullying

Julien Bapes Bapes is his name. The young man is prosecuted for online defamation on the person of Mirabelle Lingom who died on September 6th 2021.

Julien Bapes one of four suspects was arrested in a saloon at the Ange Raphael neighborhood in Douala on August 30th 2022 and taken to the Ndokoti court for judgement. The young man who had been left at the New Bell prison pending trial, pleaded not guilty during his first court hearing on September 1 2022. His lawyers asked for bail to be granted so their client who has a broken leg can get proper medical treatment.

The case has been adjourned to September 15th 2022.

How it all started

Julien Bapes Bapes is the ex-boyfriend of late Mirabelle Lingom who reportedly turned bitter on her after a breakup. It is alleged that Bapes alongside Clotaire Nguedjo, Jean Louis Batoum and Fritz Messey shared nude pictures of the deceased on social media accusing her of being an actor in a sex tape with whistleblower Paul Tchouta. Allegations the 17-year-old victim denied. One month after the cyber insults, Lingom was raped by unknown individuals on her way home from school. She died after a brief illness and was burried in September 2021. The family of the young girl have been denouncing rape and murder and demanding justice.

Clotaire Nguedjo and Jean Louis Batoum two of the suspects were arrested on November 1 and 3 2021 but later set free.

Parents of late Mirabelle Lingom remain hopeful justice is served on September 15.
