One pupil dies, two injured in Kumbo grenade explosion

The pupils on their way to take part in the First School Leaving Certificate, FSLC, came across a grenade around Tobin, in the heart of Kumbo, Bui Division in the North West region. Ignorant of the dangers, they picked it up before it exploded, killing one of the St. Theresa Catholic School and wounding the hands of two others, a source told CNA.

The unexploded grenade was a remnant of an earlier battle between the Government and Ambazonia forces in Tobin. Separatists had detonated an IED near the Tobin gendarmerie brigade on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

A reaction from Government forces led to sporadic exchanges of gunshots. The Bui Warriors said they carried out the attack, claiming that several Cameroon armed forces died.

The injured victims have been taken to the hospital while the deceased pupil was taken to the mortuary.

Unexploded grenades have killed several children in the past. They often play with them thinking they are toys.

The Kumbo incident has been blamed on Government forces who had dropped the grenade there in the course of responding to an attack from the non-state armed actors.

Yelim IED attack

Another separatist attack took place around Yelim, en route to Kumbo town. Members of the Bui Unity Warriors, an armed group shared a video where they are seen setting off an explosive device targeting a military convoy. Casualties have not been known. The attack came a few hours after one fighter, commander “Moon Tiger” was killed in a battle.
