North West Region: Chaos In Bamenda After Police Kills Seven Year Old Pupil

A few minutes after midday in Bamenda, around the new road in the Nkwen neighborhood, Policemen stationed there fired gunshots at a pickup car in an attempt to stop the driver. The bullets hit a 7-year-old child, Tataw Brandy.

The young girl fell from the wounds and hit her head on a stone. She was later declared dead upon arrival at the PMI hospital.

Protests In Bamenda

Angered by this act, protesters are marched towards Mobile Nkwen with the corpse of the child. The protest later spread to the entire City with bikers accompanied by the population marching and singing, “because of 500 FCFA”

Burning, Shooting , Running

At least four persons were shot by Police, one of the victims died around the end of tar, Longla. Others are receiving treatment in hospitals. Witnesses say that police fired live bullets at protesters to disperse the angry crowd. The City Council shuttle bus was set on fire, tyres taken out of garages and burned on the road.

Northwest Governor Assures

The protesters marched to the governor’s office at Up Station, chanting “500, 500, 500” insinuating that the Policeman wanted the sum of 500 FCFA from the driver.

Northwest Governor, Adolph Lele L’Afrique said that the Polieman who fired the gunshots in New Road Nkwen, that killed a pupil , had been arrested.

He told reporters in Bamenda that investigations have been opened and if found that the girl died because of the gunshots, he will be punished.

Mr L’Afrique confirmed reports that the Policeman fired the gunshot at a vehicle that was allegedly running away from being controlled.

“The head of state has called me to extend his condolences to the family”

The Governor has not commented on the usage of live bullets by government forces aiming at protesters.

At least two have died.
