The newly elected pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, has called for peace and unity among Christians and people across the world. Speaking from the balcony of the Vatican just after being revealed as the new head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV addressed a crowd of more than 40,000 gathered in St. Peter’s Square. He emphasized the importance of becoming a missionary Church that builds bridges, fosters dialogue, and welcomes everyone with open arms.
The new pope paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, and urged the faithful to live with love and compassion. He reassured the crowd that evil would not prevail, proclaiming:
” Without fear, united, hand in hand with God and among ourselves, we will go forward. We are disciples of Christ, Christ goes before us, and the world needs His light. Humanity needs Him like a bridge to reach God and His love. You help us to build bridges with dialogue and encounter so we can all be one people always in peace.” (Translation from Vatican News.)
He also stressed the importance of walking in peace and charity, staying close, especially to those who are suffering.
Born Robert Prevost, the 69-year-old American was chosen after a two-day conclave in Vatican City. He becomes the first American ever to lead the Catholic Church.
