Macky Sall suspends Tik Tok in Senegal

Senegalese Minister of Communication, Telecommunications, and Digital Economy, Moussa Bocar Thiam has signed a recent press release suspending the Tiktok application in the country.

The app is suspended on claims that it is the most used platform by Senegalese nationals to disseminate hateful and subversive content on the internet.

“It has been noted that the TikTok application is the social network preferred by ill-intentioned people to disseminate hateful and subversive messages threatening the stability of the country,” Minister Thiam said in the press release signed on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

The suspension comes barely a few days after the internet cut off all over the country on Monday, following a protest as a result of the dissolution of the main opposition party and the imprisonment of the party leader Ousmane Sonko.

The internet cut-off has been condemned by Amnesty International and other Human Rights organizations.

Amnesty International terms it “an attack on freedom of information” while calling on the authorities to “restore the Internet”.
