Handball Lionesses take part in fourth World Cup: Here is what you need to know

By Stephen TADAHA

The Handball Lionesses of Cameroon will lock horns with Montenegro at 6pm this Thursday November 30, at the Helsingborg Arena in Sweden for their first game of the Women’s World Championship which began on Wednesday November 29.

The Lionesses arrived Sweden in the evening hours of Wednesday from France where they rounded up their final preparations. The girls of Tabeth Njantou are just 14 in number instead of 16 with two who reportedly abandoned the team for greener pastures.

Cameroon is participating at the tournament for the 4th time after the 2005, 2017 and 2021 expeditions with the best performance being the 20th place achieved in 2017.

During the last World Championship in Spain, Cameroon finished bottom in group B with zero point.

The team however won two games against Uzbekistan and Iran in the President’s cup which is a tournament meant for the weakest teams in the tournament. Contrary to the President’s Cup, the best teams after the group stage, take part in the main tournament and Cameroon has never taken part.

The Lionesses are in group B alongside Paraguay, Hungary and Montenegro.
