By Stephen TADAHA

The Handball Lionesses of Cameroon have made history by grabbing their qualification ticket to the main round of the 2023 World Women’s Handball Championship.

The girls of Tabeth Njantou defeated Paraguay 26-23 in their last group game of the preliminary round, the first ever for the Handball Lionesses.

With the victory, Cameroon maintained the third place in group B which sees them through to the main round.

According to Kongnyuy Sifan, one of the players, it is thanks to the fighting spirit and a well organized defense shown by the team which made them grab the victory.

“We defended well contrary to the other games. First of all we assured in defense and we were scoring more. It was not that easy in the first half, we were some how missing some of the goals and had to correct them in the second half to grab this first victory” Kongnyuy Sifan commented.

The Lionesses are in group I of the main group and will play their first game on December 7 against Sweden. The main round is made up of four groups of 6 teams each with the first two qualifying for the Knockout phase.

This is the first time Cameroon sail to the main round of the world championship in four participations.
