BAMENDA, Cameroon (CNA) — Cameroon’s Ministry of Finance has launched a special audit mission into the financial management of the Zhoa Municipal Council in the North-West Region following complaints lodged by the mayor against the municipal treasurer.
A mission letter signed by the Director General of the Treasury, Financial and Monetary Cooperation and dated June 23, 2026, states that the inspection was ordered after the mayor petitioned the Governor of the North-West Region, with copies sent to the Ministers of Finance and Decentralisation and Local Development, reportedly requesting the replacement of the current municipal treasurer.
According to the document, a three-member Treasury inspection team has been assigned to investigate the allegations, establish whether there were financial or administrative lapses, determine the responsibility of those involved, and recommend disciplinary measures where necessary. The team has been given 10 days to complete its assignment.
The inspectors will review the council’s financial management from Jan. 1, 2025, examine accounting records, investigate the disbursement of FCFA 4.3 million in mission allowances and vouchers for the municipal treasurer, assess pending payments, and evaluate the working relationship between the mayor and the treasurer.
The mission letter also instructs the Paymaster General of Bamenda to facilitate the inspection, while a detailed report containing findings and recommendations is expected to be submitted to the Director General of the Treasury upon completion of the mission.
Recently, there has been a tug-of-war between the treasurer, Eric Doh Mutia, and the Mayor, Njah Titus.
While the treasurer accused the Mayor of collecting money from taxpayers, allegedly without consent from the treasury, the Mayor has also filed complaints alleging mismanagement.
