DRC gov’t accuses Americans of attempted coup

Three Americans were arrested over their alleged involvement in a failed coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Reports in local media suggested the arrested men were CIA operatives although the US ambassador in the city was keen to distance the US from any involvement.

The country is on edge as police attempt to restore order and look into people who may have been engaged in the tragedy that happened on Saturday night.

“The security defense forces have put down an attempted coup. Congolese and foreigners were part of the attempt. Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge, the spokesperson for the Congolese army stated, “These foreigners and Congolese, including their leader, have been put out of action”.

Armed men attacked the Kinshasa residence of Vital Kamerhe, a federal legislator and candidate for speaker of the National Assembly of Congo. These men were stopped by his guards according to a statement released on X by his spokesperson Michel Moto Muhima.

The gunfight began at the residence on Tshatshi Boulevard at approximately 4:30 am, killing one of the attackers and two police officers according to Muhima.

In other to address the issue in his party, which controls the national legislature, President Felix Tshisekedi met with lawmakers and leaders of the ruling coalition, Sacred Union of the Nation on Friday.

“It would not be difficult to dissolve the national assembly and hold fresh elections if these unacceptable practices continue”, he declared.
