The leader of the MANIDEM political party was announced dead early Monday December 1, 2025, by his sister Mariana Ekane.
The news was received with shock and consternation but the political class of Cameroon were not too shock- the regime operates in a dictatorial manner that it is ready to crush anyone opposed to their leadership. Anicet Ekane is a victim of anti-democracy- he was arrested, labelled a terrorist and locked up in a cell where he had limited access to his oxygen and medications.
Ekane became a target the day he gave a chance to CRM president, Maurice Kamto, to represent the party in the October polls. Unknown to many that Kamto was going to become a candidate, Ekane saved the day even though the former would later be disqualified under unclear circumstances.
That was not all, Ekane’s support to Issa Tchiroma and eventual claims that he won the elections made the regime furious and in an attempt stop the big wigs supporting Tchiroma, he was arrested , jailed and he died wihtout having the chance to attend a trial.
The regime’s dictatorial tactics, disrespect of the rule of law, unwillingness to allow a levelled political playing field, has caused untold suffering to Cameroonians.
The Tragic End of a Courageous Leader
The death of Anicet Ekane marked a dark chapter in the political history of Cameroon, illustrating the brutal extent to which authoritarian regimes will go to silence dissent. As a prominent figure advocating for democracy and reform, Ekane’s unwavering stance against corruption and oppression made him a symbol of hope for many citizens yearning for change.
Despite his efforts to promote transparency and justice, Ekane faced relentless persecution from the ruling regime. His arrest was not merely an act of political suppression but a calculated move to eliminate a potential threat to their grip on power. The conditions of his detention were deliberately harsh, depriving him of necessary medical care and basic human rights, leading to his untimely demise.
The regime’s ruthless tactics extended beyond Ekane’s imprisonment. It orchestrated a climate of fear and intimidation, deterring others from speaking out or challenging its authority. The death of Ekane became a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who dare to stand up against tyranny in Cameroon.
Within the country, many are mourning and complaining in silence, knowing that speaking out could lead to similar fates.
Ekane’s legacy endures as a testament to courage in the face of oppression. His life and tragic death continue to inspire activists and advocates for democracy across Cameroon and beyond, fueling the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice in an environment marred by dictatorship.
