DDR Buea occupants want reintegration, not ’embezzled’ upkeep money

Occupants of the Buea DDR Centre on Monday, October 3, 2022, expressed dissatisfaction over a statement made by the National Coordinator of the DRR Fai Yengo Francis. The former fighters say Mr. Yengo said on National radio that his office disbursed the sum of FCFA 130 million for the upkeep of the former combatants, but they have not felt the impact of the money.

One told CNA, “The ex-fighters have called on the government to use the FCFA 130 million and reintegrate a good number of them rather than give it to embezzlers in the name of upkeep. Staying at the Centre is not helping to solve the Anglophone crisis at all.”

The Divisional Officer of Buea and a representative of the South West Governor visited the striking former rebels and promised to table their issue to the Prime Minister for solutions.

The fighters also said the government promised to send their kids to school but ended up giving them only FCFA 20, 000 for back to school.

They took to the streets of Buea, protesting poor living conditions.
