Cameroonian Academic Urges Youth to Pursue Positive Influence, Condemns Explicit Social Media Content
BUEA, Cameroon — Cameroonian academic Dr. Mutah has criticized what he describes as the growing glorification of explicit online content and unproductive social media disputes, urging young people to pursue more meaningful forms of influence.
In a Facebook post over the weekend, Dr. Jude A. Mutah lamented that some young Cameroonian girls who share explicit content online are increasingly being celebrated as celebrities and influencers.
He also decried the frequent online feuds among some Cameroonian social media personalities, arguing that many seek attention for the wrong reasons.
Drawing comparisons with countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya, he said many young people in those nations are using social media to showcase their talents, entrepreneurship, innovation, and positive contributions to society.
Dr. Mutah commended hardworking young Cameroonians who are pursuing education, learning vocational skills, building businesses, and striving to improve their lives and those of their families.
He described them as the country’s “true celebrities and influencers,” encouraging them to remain focused despite receiving little public attention.He further warned that Cameroon already faces significant national challenges and should not encourage behavior that damages the country’s image or misleads the younger generation.
The academic called on the public to celebrate individuals who build, create, educate, innovate, and inspire, rather than promoting explicit online content and what he described as baseless social media conflicts.
