Buea: 93 arrested in raid, freed after nine days
The chief of Maumu, HRM Embola Charles confirmed the release of 93 persons, mostly youths who were arrested on October 20 in his community.
In a statement on the night of October 29, he said the arrested individuals were freed by the military tribunal in Buea upon investigation. Nine days into detention.
“They’re now back home with their families, safe and sound,” Chief Embola wrote. Further charging the released to “… uphold the law and maintain a clean record as responsible citizens of Cameroon.”
The traditional ruler’s statement did not indicate if payment of any sort was made and also, conditions of the release.
The mass arrest had stirred a protest of women on October 24 before the Gendarmerie headquarters in Buea. Reports say minors were equally detained as a result of the indiscriminate arrests.
Media men confess being deterred from covering the protest with warnings from armed officers. Life is yet to go normal in several villages around Buea Municipality which have suffered mass arrests in recent months.
