Bamenda: Soldiers kill taxi driver, woman and unborn twins

There was consternation in Bamenda, North West region, after the dramatic death of a taxi driver and a pregnant woman.
The woman was pregnant with twins.
CNA sources said there was a high-speed incident in Ngomgham, Bamenda II Subdivision on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. Witnesses report that the taxi, speeding from Small Mankon and chased by motorbikes, ignored stop orders at a military checkpoint. Security forces fired warning shots at the taxi before it crashed into another car, and the driver was shot dead while attempting to flee.
Inside the taxi was Shiela Nemu Garbi from Kungi Donga Mantung division, who had reportedly been shouting for help. She was rushed to St. Maria Soledad Hospital, but despite an emergency operation, both she and her unborn twins did not survive. Her body was at the Bafut Hospital mortuary, while her babies have been buried.
The motive behind the driver’s actions remains unclear, with reports suggesting either an escape attempt or a possible kidnapping. CNA learned that the driver wanted to kidnap but when she shouted for help, biker started trailing the taxi to apprehend the driver but he ran fast passed a control post. Instead of using a technical way to apprehend him, the military fired shots at the car, killing the girl.
But the government forces who fired shots have been criticised by those who saw the incident saying they were just trigger happy.
Another source said the military came to the hospital but left.
