Atanga Nji: Bikes purchased in Douala must have matriculation numbers

A day after Governor Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua of the Littoral modified the ban on the circulation of commercial motor bikes in the town of Douala, the minister of territorial administration, Paul Atanga Nji says criminals will not be tolerated in the city.

Paul Atanga Nji was speaking on Tuesday December 20th as he presided over a security meeting in Douala. The meeting was attended by the Governor of the Littoral, the Senior Divisonal Officer (SDO) for Wouri and top security officials in the Littoral.

The main reason of the meeting as revealed by Atanga Nji was the preoccupying security situation in the town with the recent outbreak of a group of gangsters popularly known as “microbes” who recently went on rampage brutally attacking and injuring denizens. Tuesday’s meeting that was held behind closed doors, had as aim to identify abnormalities especially in the commercial bike sector after more than 1,200 of them were seized in less than a week following security measures imposed by Governor Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua. It was then noticed that 98% of bikes in the economic Capital circulate illegally meaning only 2% are identifiable.

Reason why the Paul Atanga Nji through the Governor of the Littoral revealed some measures that will go operational as from the year 2023.

“Those purchasing bikes from dealers as from January 1st 2023, must make sure the bikes are registered,” says Littoral Governor, Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua.

He adds that the transport ministry will ensure that bike owners have their official documents in hand within 24 hours. A decision welcomed by some stakeholders in the commercial bike sector.

“The fact that the MINAT boss wants bikes to be registered before leaving the sales house will help us have register that will easily identify a commercial bike rider from a non-commercial bike rider,” says Samuel Frank Mvondo, bike vendor and trade unionist.

Decisions taken during the meeting, according to administrative officials will bring back serenity in the economic capital, Douala.
