Analysis: The Fake Appointment Letter Delivered to CRTV Raises Troubling Questions About Power and Governance in Cameroon

By Nfor Hanson Nchanji

The fake presidential appointment document that was physically taken to the state broadcaster, CRTV, has generated more questions than answers. While CRTV verified the document and rejected it as fake before it could be read on air, the incident itself has become a subject of political analysis.

The central question is simple: Why would an individual walk into Cameroon’s state broadcaster carrying a forged presidential appointment document and expect it to be treated as potentially authentic?

That question goes beyond the fake document itself. It touches on public perceptions of authority, the functioning of state institutions, and the political climate surrounding the presidency.

An Extraordinary Attempt

State media is not where citizens ordinarily submit unofficial government documents for broadcast. Presidential appointments are among the most tightly controlled official communications in any government. We used to hear stories how on each appointment time, military would escort the car carrying the appointment envelope so that the names would not be altered.

For someone to take a forged appointment list directly to CRTV suggests they believed there was at least a possibility that the document would receive serious attention. Whether that belief was based on ignorance, deliberate provocation, or confidence in institutional weaknesses remains unknown.

Regardless of the motive, the incident has raised concerns about how official state communications are perceived in this present Cameroon where its president is not as active as before.

A Reflection of Political Uncertainty?

Some political observers have argued on tv that the episode reflects the uncertainty surrounding the presidency.

President Paul Biya has led Cameroon since 1982. During the earlier decades of his administration, presidential appointments were viewed as highly centralized, with little room for confusion over authentic decrees.

Many analysts contend that under those circumstances, few people would have considered attempting to introduce a fake presidential appointment document into the state’s communication system.

Today, however, increasing speculation about succession, elite rivalries, and the future direction of the country has created an atmosphere in which unusual political incidents attract greater attention.

More Than a Hoax

Whether intended as a prank, an act of misinformation, or a political stunt, the fake appointment document has become symbolic of broader concerns.

Critics argue that the episode reflects a country experiencing institutional strain, where competing political interests and uncertainty about the future have weakened confidence in state authority. With the president out of the country, media organs like Jeune Afrique reported that he went to Switzerland for medical examination, though the government debunked this.

Supporters of the government may see it differently, describing the incident as an isolated act by an individual seeking attention or attempting to embarrass state institutions.

Without evidence identifying the person responsible or establishing their motive, either interpretation remains speculative. There must have been a hidden hand in what the young man did.

In social media, there are unverified claims that people from high places in government were involved and just used the young man as decoy.

Questions That Remain

The incident nevertheless leaves several legitimate questions unanswered:

Until these questions are answered, the affair will continue to fuel political debate.

Whatever the explanation, the incident serves as a reminder that trust in state institutions depends not only on their ability to detect false information, but also on maintaining public confidence that official presidential communications remain beyond doubt.

I repeat, Paul Biya in his prime would never allow this to happen.

Three months since approving the position of VP, the president is yet to make the appointment. This has stalled activities as people now concerntrate on lobbying.

Please Mr President, deliver us from this present predicament!!!
