Abong-Mbang: woman dies of odontol intoxication

A 28-year-old Baka lady has reportedly died in Abong Mbang in the East region of Cameroon after consuming odontol, a locally produced whiskey on the evening of September 5th.

Mendo Lucie reportedly drank a great quantity of this liquor alongside her boyfriend. In a state of intoxication and drunkeness, she is said to have headed back to the forest leaving the man behind. That was the last time she was seen alive. It was only the following day that her partner was able to realize that Mendo Lucie never made it all the way home.

The man reported the disappearance of his wife to the village chief Madouma as well as Gendarmerie officials. A search was conducted and the lady’s lifeless body finally discovered in a bush.

According to a medical doctor who was present at the scene, Mendo Lucie died as a result of hypoglycemia, a consequence of the consumption of odontol.

After medical examination, the body has been returned to her family for burial.

The consumption of alcohol, especially the said locally made whiskey, is known to be a common practice for many people in Abong Mbang.
