The Senior Divisional Officer for Diamaré, Jean-Marc Ekoa Mbarga, has consoled the families of the researchers recently victimized by mob justice in the Far North region. During his visit to the locality on March 13, he expressed regret over the incident and stated that he was there to convey the condolences of the head of state and his wife, Chantal Biya.
“I am accompanied by a widow and five children left by Mr. Oumarou Bakali, who was with the two researchers conducting their study,” the SDO noted, condemning the brutal assassination of the researchers.
SDO Jean-Marc emphasised that the government is taking appropriate measures to support the families and announced that at least 20 suspects have been arrested; justice will be served. He urged the population to avoid vengeful actions.
He said : “We also came to tell the population that we do not want to hear of any vengeance, as it solves no problems. Vengeance belongs to God. Let’s understand that there has been a situation in a lawful country, and the state is doing its job.”
The mob justice incident has drawn widespread condemnation from the public, including academics, who have labeled it heinous and unacceptable.
The families of the victims protested against the treatment of their loved ones, who were burned alive and buried at the crime scene, requesting that they be exhumed and given a proper burial. In response, the exhumation will take place on Friday, March 14.
