Commonwealth day to focus on youths
“The year 2023 has been declared the year of the youths as set aside by the Commonwealth ” This is one of the significant remarks made by Felix Mbayu, Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth as Cameroon joined some over 50 countries on Monday 13 March 2023 to observe the Commonwealth Day, which marks the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter.
The celebration was presided over by the Minister of External Relations, Lejeune Mbella Mbella in Yaoundé. During the ceremony, Felix Mbayu used the opportunity to shape the current ambitions of the organization.
” In 2023, the Commonwealth will seek to strengthen the voice of the youth so that they positively contribute to national development and the promotion of the country’s image within and beyond the Commonwealth” declared Felix Mbayu.
The Minister also revealed that the Commonwealth has been seeking to galvanize actions to focus on Youth issues at the highest level and that Cameroon will join its peers to drive National Actions toward equipping youths with tools to face future Challenges.
“We have taken note of the Youths’ call for training, employment, economic opportunities, and the inclusion of the most vulnerable and these issues are among our top priorities” Concluded The Minister.
This year’s Commonwealth was observed under the theme ‘Forging a sustainable and peaceful common future’. The theme combines member states’ active commitment to promoting peace, prosperity, and sustainability, especially through climate action, to secure a better future for our young people and improve the lives of all Commonwealth citizens.
Cameroon joined the Commonwealth some 28 years ago, that was on November 13th, 1995 during the Organization’s 14th Heads of Government gathering in Auckland, New Zealand, and became the 52nd member. Cameroon also became the first Commonwealth nation to belong to the Francophonie.
This is the first Commonwealth Day since the passing away of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and the First presided over by His Majesty King Charles III as King and Head of the Commonwealth.
