Nigerian woman sentenced to 13 years imprisonment in Italy for running prostitution ring

A 46-year-old Nigerian woman has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment in Italy for the illegal trafficking of Nigerian girls to Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain so they could be initiated into prostitution with the use of violence and threats.

According to the Italian police in a statement on March 8th, 2023, she was one of the few women on Italy’s most-wanted list since 2010. They also described her as a prominent figure in the Nigerian mafia.

Police authorities say her arrest was facilitated due to an Extradition treaty signed between Nigeria and Italy in 2020 and was possible thanks to the joint work of the Nigerian judiciary, the Italian ambassador to Nigeria, and the Italian Ministry of Justice.
She was arrested in Nigeria on June 4, 2022, following an international warrant issued and was flown from Abuja, Nigeria to Rome.

According to the Deputy chief of police in charge of International Coordination, Victoria Rizzi, “Africa is confirmed today as a strategic area for the search for fugitives and the fight against organized crime,”.
He says most African developing countries are elective places for the laundering of illicit capital of organized crimes. He reiterates Italy’s commitment internationally to facilitate, through penal and administrative procedures the tracking down of such mafia operators.
