At least 11 killed, over 88 injured in Guinea oil terminal blast

At least 11 people have died and 88 people injured after a huge explosion at the main oil terminal occurred in Guinea’s capital Conakry, officials have said.

Thie incident is said to have occurred on Monday December 18, 2023.

According to Reuters reports, the explosion at the West African nation main oil terminal rocked the Kaloum administrative district in downtown Conakry, blowing out the windows of several nearby homes and forcing hundreds to flee.

They also stated that, workers, excluding defense and security forces and medical personnel, were advised to stay at home. Public and private schools and most gas stations were also closed.

Going by BBC reports, the media stated the number of people injured to vary from 84-100.

Government spokesman Ousmane Gaoual Diallo told BBC that he could not confirm casualty figures because “we still haven’t finished counting the number of victims”.

The spokesman was reported by BBC to have added that; “The gutted oil depot was strategically very important as it supplied fuel to almost all of the country,”.
