Toko Ekambi to miss double encounter against Namibia

By Pavel Joseph

Karl Toko Ekambi will be absent from Cameroon’s double fixture against Namibia on March 24 and 28, due to an injury.

The medical staff of the Indomitable Lions confirmed this Tuesday morning that the player suffered a hamstring strain, during the France Ligue 1 match pitting his club Stade Rennais FC against PSG on Sunday, March 19.

He will need medical attention and rest for a minimum of 10 days, the health personnel said.

This comes at a time when the striker has been gradually picking form after a frustrating exit from former club Olympique Lyonnais. He scored one of the goals that handed his new side Rennes a two-nil victory over Ligue 1 giants PSG on Sunday.

Ekambi’s absence means the injury cases in the Lions’ den have now gone up to three. Choupo Moting and Fai Collins had earlier been declared unfit and were replaced by Kpakum and Elite One top scorer Emmanuel Mahop and PWD defender Etta Bawak respectively.

Ahead of the matches counting for days three and four of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Rigobert Song and his squad started training at the Mundi multisports complex in Yaounde on Monday.

Cameroon are the leader in Group C of the qualifiers, with three points. The Lions look forward to securing a place at the AFCON 2023 which will be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire from January to February 2024.
