Yaounde: sambo athlete dies during training
The Cameroon sambo family are still to regain their spirits following the tragic death of one of their members.
Bob sim as he was fondly called by his friends and colleagues passed away this June 25th 2022 after he received a kick in the head during training. The team was in camp at the Camair neighborhood in Yaounde in preparation of the African sambo championship scheduled for July 16 and 17 in yaounde when the incident occured. He was in a test match for the combat sambo specialty when he received the fatal kick from his opponent. He was immediately rushed to the Yaounde Central Hospital where he unfortunately passed away a little while later.
His family memebers and colleagues as well as friends are in shock. Bob is described as a determined and fun loving person who would push himself beyond limits just to make his team proud. “he told me he wanted to be a continental champion this year” says team member Seidou Nji with tears in his eyes. Bob’s remains have to deposited at the Central hospital morgue pending burial.
Cameroon’s sambo athletes are among the most poorly treated by Cameroon’s sports ministry. They work for no pay at all and can barely afford three meals a day or rent although they have several times been world champions.
