Yaounde inhabitants fed up with frequent power outages

Inhabitants of the nation’s political capital, Yaounde have expressed mixed reactions towards the constant disruptions in electricity supply in major neighborhoods in the city.

Most city dwellers say they fear the on-and-off seizures may destroy their appliances.

“ I for one this is the second time I am repairing my fridge because of the way they are cutting the light so it’s not really normal. I live at Mendongbit used to be like this but this February is different from the previous times, it’s too much,” Nelson Ngu Mbuelle, a Yaounde inhabitant laments.

For most students, it is a difficult situation for them as they are unable to carry out school work efficiently.
“ It is not really the first time but it is disturbing me since this is the period of typing reports. When there is no light I’m obliged to use my phone and if the battery gets low I only have to wait till it’s our turn for the lights to come back,” Sarhane Afane, a university of Yaounde 1 student explained.

Inhabitants are left with no option but to deal with the frequent rationing of electricity supply in the Littoral, West, South West, South, East, and North West regions till March 2023.

It should be recalled that on 25 January 2023, the power distribution company ENEO announced the electricity rationing in the country.

This move, which affects 7 regions of the country is said to be the result of the drop in hydrology on the Ntem River, which will lead to a persistent drop in production at Memvé’élé until March.

ENEO added in its statement that the contribution of thermal power stations will not be enough to cover the deficit between supply and demand during the aforementioned period. It has thus recommended that users adopt energy-saving and safety measures.
