Yaounde: Illegal water production unit dismantled, promoters arrested
Gendarmes have dismantled a network of individuals who generate water from unhealthy sources and commercialize it in sachets to the population of Yaoundé and its environs.
The production unit was uncovered in the Cité Verte neighborhood on March 7, 2024, by officials working in the Ministry of Public Health who alerted gendarme officials.
“The activity carried out here is illegal and very dangerous. It is unhygienic and the environment itself is a mess.” Lt. Eugénie Yano Anguisso, head of the judicial research unit at the 1st gendarmerie region told reporters.
The owner was arrested at the water production unit.
“The owner of this illegal enterprise will remain in our custody until officials from the Ministry of Public Health carry out findings on whether the sachet water is healthy for consumption”. Disclosed the gendarmerie official.
According to the suspect, “We generate water from a borehole which we store in reservoirs with the help of pumps. From the reservoir we sachet and supply in the market”.
The Ministry of Public Health stated that the harmful effect will be enormous if such sachet water is unhealthy for consumption.
The Cité Verte health district chief, Marilyne Longue cautioned the population to be very vigilant and denounce such illegal practices which could cost their lives once they consume the unhealthy water.
