By Nde Laura
The farmers have been drilled on the importance of using quality fish food in other to satisfy the local demand for fish.
This was during a workshop organised by the Ministry of Fisheries, Live stock and Animal industries, MiNEPIA in collaboration with a renowned Italian Fish expert, Nuturalle on Tuesday October 4th 2022 in Yaoundé, center region.
Why import fish and sell at exorbitant prices when Cameroon has all the potentials of producing and selling quality fish for meals and for exportation.?
The country is endowed with a lot of rivers, lakes marshy lands and even seas enough for all kinds of fish but how can Cameroonians use this natural resources to create wealth for ourselves these were the main reasons and concerns raised in the workshop.
According to the Sub Director of Aquaculture, MINEPIA, Divine Ngala Tombuh, they are looking for solutions to reduce the cost of fish production in the country, “fish feed has been identified as one of the issues making local fish expensive as it constitutes 60-70% of the cost of production for fish. We need to reduce this cost of fish feed in other to reduce the cost of fish,”.
Some fish producers like Jean Claude, a renowned fish producer in Yaoundé and Dr Wamba who is said to have produced 32 tons of fish were acknowledged. The producers say they are expecting greater outputs.
It is expected that the workshop that brought together fish producers from all over the country will create an impact in future.
