Hundreds of spectators, sponsors, donors, and football lovers converged at the Catholic School Field in Wotutu on Sunday, August 29th for the finals of the Wotutu-Ewongo football tournament.
The objective of the month-long tournament which saw the participation of 8 teams, was to bring a new lease of life to the Wotutu community of the Bonjongo Court Area.
The encounter opposing Lions of Wotutu and Sunshine FC ended 1-1 but the winner was decided after post-match penalties as the exploit of Lions of Wotutu shot-stopper and goalkeeper permitted his team triumph 4-1.
The heavy rains of Saturday had given way to beautiful weather and blue skies, setting the stage for a beautiful soccer jamboree. When the Limbe trumpet choir with their brass bands and trumpets hit the high notes at about 3 pm, the village was in a total frenzy. Both teams put up a beautiful display of soccer with swift passes, clinical tackles, and robust defending characteristic of “champagne football”.
The event was also graced with high-level guests from across the country; Professor Julius Che Tita of the University of Buea, Dr. Ebob Eta Nkame, Humphrey Ngando of Ecobank, Dr. Kenneth Ngu Foncha, Mbua Eneme, Prince Imoh Elangwe, Bello Maya, Senior Pastor Comedian, MC Dibenja, Kwoh Elonge, Prince Enobi, Francline Fonderson, Jacky Manga, Barrister Arnold Bato, Nkengasong Martin, Greham Moden.
For the first time in the history of the tournament, the Lions of Wotutu received the winner’s medals in addition to their cash prize. Prizes were also handed out to the Best Player of the tournament, the highest goal scorer, and the finalists Sunshine FC.
In a statement during the award ceremony, the promoter Edwin Eselem noted that “the biggest winner of the tournament is the Wotutu community”.
For having stood the test of the trying times and the ravaging socio-political crisis, the tournament offered a glimmer of hope that better days were ahead for the community. One of the VIP spectators, Senior Pastor Comedian, thanked the promoter for putting a smile on the faces of the people of Wotutu and pledged his support for subsequent editions of the tournament.
With the support of the entire Wotutu community, the promoter promised to make the tournament a permanent one and guests also promised to lend their support to the community.
