The heart plays a very important role in the human body. It pumps blood around the body all the time – about 5 liters of it.
The World Heart Day observed on September 29 each year, is aimed at reminding everyone around the world to take care of their hearts. This year’s campaign focused on the essential step of knowing our hearts first. The risk factors linked to heart diseases and the prevention of these risk factors.
To observe this day, CNA met with Dr. Belanquale Claude, Head of the Bangang Medical Center, in the Bamboutos division of the West Region, who gave us some tips to avoid heart-related diseases, among which the need to adopt strict hygienic measures.
” To take good care of our hearts, we need to do regular physical activities and walk for at least 30 minutes a day if you cannot do that due to the fact that your heart doesn’t tolerate you doing such exercises, then eat healthily, drink a lot of water, get fruits and vegetables, avoid sweet things, excess fat, alcohol, and tobacco smoking. These things can have negative effects on our hearts and can lead to heart failure or hypertension.
” We should also regularly monitor our blood pressure and cholesterol levels: High blood pressure and high cholesterol are significant risk factors for heart disease. Regularly monitoring your blood pressure and cholesterol levels can help identify any abnormalities and allow for early intervention and treatment,” adds Dr Belanquale.
The theme of World Heart Day 2023 is ‘Use Heart, Know Heart’.
