World Handball Championship: It is not Cameroon’s level – Expert

By Biwah Bryan

In a brief exchange with Cameroon News Agency, Ashifon Henry a referee instructor in the international handball federation revealed that the ongoing world womens handball championship is beyond Cameroon’s level.

“Cameroon is going there to learn, it is not our level and we can not even stand the teams in our group except maybe Paraguay which is also on Cameroon’s level”.

“We are going there to have experience and learn so that we can have a better performance in the Next African Nations cup. Cameroon has players on African level but We have to work harder to have players who can play at the world level.”

Cameroon’s current participation in the women’s world handball championship is their  fourth. They previously competed in Spain, Germany and Their current rivals in the 2023 edition are Montenegro (two times vice champions), Hungary, and Paraguay.

Henry predicts that Cameroon’s chances of winning against Montenegro and Hungary are slim. Therefore, their strategy should focus on minimizing the number of goals they concede and Winning against Paraguay, who are equally matched, will be crucial for Cameroon’s advancement to the next phase of the tournament.

Despite Ashifon Henry labeling it a no-go area, he remains confident in Cameroon’s ability to create a strong team for the future.

“We have to train young players, open handball schools and start training our players so that at the level of our cadet team we will already be able to have players who can compete.”
