Women’s day preparations reach fever pitch in Yaounde

Less than 24 hours to the celebration of International Women’s Day, women across the nation’s political capital Yaounde are already dancing to the tune of the event.

In most tailoring workshops and markets across the city, one can’t help but notice the women’s day fabric showcased.

For some designers and tailors, this period is an opportunity for them to make some extra cash since the demand is high.

According to Mary Ibousou, a tailor at carrefour Jouvance, Yaounde, the pressure from customers pushes her to increase the price for sewing.

“It is due to the pressure. Most women bring their fabric only on the day before like today so I have to collect extra money because I will be working overtime to be able to meet up. The pressure is always high during this period even on the d day tomorrow I’m still going to sell so don’t bother even if I increase the price all the stock will be bought,” she explained.

To most women, the commemoration of women’s day is an opportunity for them to bond with their female friends, colleagues, and family.
“Every women’s day I go out with my friends and colleagues to just spend time with them and enjoy the day. We mostly have our njangi meetings on this day,” Noella Mbona, a civil servant explained.

The 38th edition of the International Women’s Day will be commemorated under the theme “DigitAll: for an inclusive digital world innovation and technologies for gender equality.”
The theme aims at recognizing and celebrating the contribution of women and girls who promote advances in transformative technologies and digital education.

Prior to the event, health sensitization campaigns, sports and cultural performances, as well as round table discussions on the theme of the celebration have have been organised by the governments and enterprises.

The women’s day celebration is an opportunity for women to make their voices heard to improve their situations and get everyone in society to respct their rights,

The Minister of women’s empowerment and family, Marie Therese Abena Ondoa had called on women to be responsible and dress decently for the celebrations. She urged them to brainstorm on the theme of this year in order to map out digital opportunities for themselves.
