Why Alpha Conde Was Arrested By Guinean Special Forces
In 2020, President Alpha Conde modified the constitution that gave him the chance to run for a third mandate which he won. Guinean constitution stated that the President would have only two terms in office and leave for another person to be democratically elected.
Alpha Conde was elected in 2010 after former strongman Moussa Dadis Camara stepped down. Camara had led a military coup in 2008 shortly after the death of President Conte.
Conde’s victory in the 2020 election was described by the opposition as fraudulent tat preceded deadly clashes in the country’s main cities.
Colonel Mamady Doubmouya
He commands the country’s special forces group ( GPS) an elite unit of the army equivalent to the Rapid Intervention Battalion, BIR, in Cameroon.
It is his unit that led the coup in Kaloum at the Presidential Palace. A journalist for France 24, Toure, said he called Colonel Mamady who told him that, “We have the president” but it was not sure how and where Alpha Conde was being detained.
The leader of the Purshists is a former legionnaire of the french army ( a highly trained infantry force) he returned to Guinea in 2018 to strengthen Guinea’s anti-terrorism unit by becoming the head of the newly created department.
He is also a former officer of the war school and has great experience in many countries such as the Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti during missions and close protection in Isreal, Cyprus, UK, and Guinea.
He has been trained by institutions in Senegal, Isreal, Paris, and Cote d’Ivoire completing each training for operational protection, unit commanders, and training of staff.
What we know so far
The President is safe but his whereabouts are not known after gunshots were fired in Kaloum at the Presidential Palace.
Mamady Doumbouya is the leader of the Putsch.
Guinea’s constitution, government, and institutions have been suspended.
The Putsch accuse President Conde of corruption, anti-democratic values, poverty among others.
Air, land, and water borders have been closed.
